Diplopterys cabrerana is a liana that finds its origin in South-America. In the Colombian- and Equadorian Amazon the large oval leaves of this liana, known as ‘oco-yaje’, are employed by the native people as an Ayahuasca additive. This plant is also known as Chaliponga. “Ayahuasca” refers to a diverse complex of South American entheogenic brews.

Chaliponga and Chacruna

Together with the yagรฉ (Banisteriopsis caapi), they form the main ingredients for the psychedelic Amazonian brew ayahuasca, which has been used for centuries in Amazonian and Andean shamanic rituals in the tropical areas of South America. The other plant with the same entheogenic properties is Psychotria viridis, which is more common in the indigenous communities of Peru and Bolivia, while Cabrerana is more common in Ecuador and Colombia. In some parts of Ecuador is also known as chacruna, although that name is more often used for psychotria viridis.

Chaliponga is rich in dimethyltryptamine (N, N -DMT), a tryptamine endogenously present in some plant and animal species, including humans. D. cabrerana also produces 5-MeO-DMT, a less common analogous structure. The plant stores the alkaloid N, N- DMT, 5-MeO-DMT and N- methyltetrahydro- beta-carboline in its leaves and stems. Samples of leaves resulted in 0.17-1.75% N, N- DMT, but only a traceable amount of N- methyltetrahydro-beta-carboline appears in the leaves. The leaves also store N-methyltryptamine and traceable amounts of bufotenine.

Chaliponga and DMT

When consumed orally, pure chaliponga leaves are mild to non-existent. This is because the DMT in the herbs is almost immediately broken down by the intestines. To make sure these effects are noticed, shamans add a MAO-inhibitor such as Banisteriopsis Caapi to prevent the DMT from being broken down in our bodies. The combination of the two plants is also called ayahuasca, a brew that is considered to be one of the most psychedelic substances in the world.

Chaliponga has been used in South America for hundreds of years during spiritual ceremonies, and shamans believe that ayahuasca allows people to communicate with the spirits. The herb is said to be able to โ€˜awaken the soulโ€™ and provide the user with a spiritual experience that rejuvenates the mind. An ayahuasca-trip usually lasts for about 6 to 8 hours, but some effects of the brew can still be noticed for months after. The DMT in chaliponga is said to induce a spectacular visual trip, often accompanied by auditory effects. Some of the effects range from seeing colorful patterns, having vivid hallucinations and making contact with the โ€˜spirit worldโ€™.

The Herb here is strictly offered as botanical specimen. Not for consumption. Consult the disclaimer before your order.
